TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Social media giant Facebook yesterday announced that it is opening a branch office in Jakarta. The company based its decision on several reasons; one of them is to help develop Indonesia's small, medium and micro businesses, as Facebook Asia-Pacific vice president Dan Neary said inJakarta, Thursday.

With 65 million users—90 percent of everyone who goes online, Indonesia is Facebook's fourth largest user base after the United States, Dan noted an interesting phenomenon that Indonesian e-marketers are largely using Facebook as a promotional tool.

Dan also met with the Cooperatives and Small-Medium Enterprises Minister, Syarifuddin Hasan. They discussed the possibility of having Facebook help Indonesian SMEs to access the global community.

Although many SMEs already use Facebook as a promotional tool, large Indonesian brands have yet to do the same, which is a contrast to big countries like the United States, where businesses are utilizing Facebook to promote their goods and services.

Another one of Facebook's objectives for opening an office branch inJakartais to improve public connection in Indonesia. "We are focusing on the 80 percent of Indonesians who are still not connected and so there are a lot of opportunities for us to collaborate with the government and public sector," Dan said.

Dan added that one of Indonesia's fastest growing sectors is technology; therefore Facebook is ready to provide the best platform for the Indonesian people.

Facebook's Jakarta office will be located in the Pacific Place building at the Sudirman Central Bussiness District (SCBD). Indonesia is the second Southeast Asian country to host a Facebook branch office afterSingapore.
